Manufacturers in the HVAC and plumbing industry usually have representatives they use to not only sell their products but also to provide expert assistance to building owners, engineers and contractors. These reps should have in-depth product knowledge along with a firm understanding of exactly how building comfort systems work.

But how can you effectively partner with them to do what’s most important: getting the best equipment for the job?

Here are there ways you can more effectively partner with your reps to increase your project’s efficiency as well as ensure that you’re getting the best bang for your buck in your equipment selection.

  1. Communicate your project goals and issues. We all know that price is often king. But more than price should come into play when you’re looking at building equipment that should last 10, 20 or even 40 years. What do you need your HVAC and plumbing equipment to do? Do you need a heating and air system in a humid climate? Do you want to have hot water quickly accessible to a large number of people? Define your goals for your rep in simple terms. They might have equipment that will perform more effectively and more efficiently than you thought possible.

  2. Be aware of time constraints. Every construction project has a deadline and yours is no exception. Be sure that you understand when to order HVAC equipment so it will be on your job-site when you need it.

  3. Specify expectations and desired results. Your rep should actively listen. The more information you can offer regarding specific expectations about equipment performance and the rep’s role in your project, the better. Continue to communicate as any problems arise throughout the life of the project. At the end, invite them over for a walk-through and discuss the positives and negatives of the job.
