HVAC PumpIn 2016, the US Department of Energy (DOE) issued the Energy Conservation Standard for Clean Water Pumps based on efficiency levels negotiated by manufacturers, efficiency advocates and others. The new standard applies to clean water pumps between 1 and 200 horsepower and requires the least efficient 25% of pumps in the current market to undergo a redesign to both improve efficiency and reduce energy losses. While the rule doesn't officially take effect until 2020, pump manufacturers and building owners should start now to improve pump performance to meet the new DOE standard.

The Hydraulic Institute (HI) helps pump manufacturers and pump test laboratories by working with third party auditors to develop pump testing protocols with are repeatable and accurate.

Recently, Taco Comfort Solutions' pump test laboratory in Cranston, RI received approval through the HI Pump Test Lab Approval Program. Now, Taco's pump lab is approved to be a third-party tester to ensure that pumps are meeting the required standards and supporting the DOE's energy saving initiatives.

According to a Taco news announcement, John White, Jr., the Executive Chairman of Taco, Inc. said, "As the current President of HI, I've been a strong advocate for the new DOE efficiency standards along with the advancement of the complementary HI test lab approval program. It's only fitting that Taco's world-class lab be part of this program and I'm proud of our lab staff who operate it to the highest standards. A third party validation promotes fairness and transparency in the market, especially as we work toward the 2020 implementation date of the DOE's commercial & industrial pump rule. HI continues to be the leading voice for our industry and Taco is proud to play our part in that effort."
Efficiency standards are coming down the pipeline.  Conversations about energy efficiency are not going away. Ensuring commercial buildings are as efficient as possible is a concern for all of us.
